Summary

One of the biggest fears that we have as herbalists and as practitioners is that not only will our remedies potentially not work or heal the person that we're working with, but that they might actually do harm, that we might give someone a plant and it creates an issue for them in their body, or they have a really bad reaction to that herb. What are some of the different ways that that can happen or reasons why that can happen, and how can you best avoid that?

Hey there everybody, Sagea Popham here, founder of the School of Evolutionary Herbalism.

0:29.6

And in this week's post, I'm going to be talking about some of the different ways in which we can have an adverse reaction to herbs, right?

0:41.2

I think one of the biggest fears that we all have as herbalists and as practitioners is that

0:48.2

not only will our remedies potentially not work or heal the person that we're working with, but that they

0:56.5

might actually do harm, right? That we might give someone a plant and it creates an issue for

1:03.8

them in their body or they have a really bad reaction to that herb. And what are some of the different

1:10.5

ways that that can happen or reasons

1:12.3

that can happen and how can you best avoid that? I think this is a really important topic

1:19.6

of discussion because sometimes we can have a reaction to an herb that is really strong and

1:27.3

really intense and sometimes that can actually be an herb that is really strong and really intense. And sometimes that can actually

1:30.4

be an indication that it is the right remedy. And sometimes we got to work through that. But

1:35.7

sometimes it's an indication that it's totally the wrong remedy and you need to find something

1:41.1

else to help that person out. So how do you tell the difference? How do you

1:45.9

differentiate the ways in which people sometimes have really strong reactions to medicinal

1:52.6

plants? So I think this is a really, really important topic of discussion. I think this is

1:59.8

something that as practitioners we need to be aware of,

2:03.1

because there's one thing that I see a lot of times happen is that sometimes people will have

2:09.5

a really strong reaction to an herb. Maybe there will be an aggravation of symptoms.

2:15.2

Maybe there will be other symptoms that emerge because it's the

2:21.0

incorrect remedy. And what we see sometimes is people kind of playing it off like, oh, no, no,

2:27.2

that's good. You know, it's a healing crisis or, you know, it's approving or, you know, it's good, just keep working with it.
