In October of 2008, with the world still shaking from the collapse of Lehman Brothers

and the future of the entire financial system being questioned, in a tiny corner of the internet a white paper was

quietly published with little fanfare. The paper ran to eight pages and it concluded

thus. We have proposed a system for electronic transactions without relying on trust. The network

is robust in its unstructured simplicity. Nodes work all at once with little coordination.

They do not need to be identified since messages are not rooted to any particular place

and only need be delivered on a best efforts basis.

Nodes can leave and rejoin the network at will,

accepting the proof of work chain as proof of what happened while they were gone.
