Summary

Have you ever thought, “I’m happy to be in this with you, God”?

In the third episode of the Good Faith Advent series, host Curtis Chang is joined by pastor and author Chuck Mingo to explore the true meaning of Advent joy. Together, they discuss how joy differs from fleeting happiness, and explain why joy deepens when shared with others. Curtis and Chuck also offer practical ways to nurture joy during life’s setbacks and “in-between” spaces. They suggest meaningful practices that can become joy-sustaining traditions, such as affirmations shared with loved ones and gratitude-centered journaling. Join this conversation and discover how joy can be cultivated and spread during the Advent season and beyond.

Welcome to the Good Faith podcast. I'm your host, Curtis Chang, and the Good Faith podcast, I'm your host, Curtis Chang. And the Good Faith podcast is a production of

0:26.1

Redeeming Babel. And it's where friends who follow Jesus help each other make sense of the world. And we are in the

0:33.3

middle of a series on Advent and how a proper understanding of Advent helps us make sense of the world.

0:40.8

And I want to say a word about why Advent is so crucial to get right and why it's so crucial

0:47.5

for us to get the world right. The reason is because we have to remember that Advent is really

0:53.5

about two historical events,

0:56.2

two concrete historical events.

0:58.5

One, which has already happened, which is the arrival of Jesus as a king in first century Israel,

1:06.0

as the long-awaited Messiah and his life and subsequent ministry, death, and resurrection,

1:13.0

something that has happened. It is also a second event that is we believe will happen in the

1:18.7

future, which is the return, the re-arrival of Jesus as the fully established king to fully

1:25.1

implement the kingdom on this world as it is in heaven.

1:29.3

And it's important to think of Advent as really the celebration of these two historical events.

1:34.6

The reason why I'm emphasizing this is it is very tempting in our secular culture is to actually

1:40.9

abstract out of Advent some abstract sort of universal values that are actually detached from these two historical events.

1:50.7

And often, the abstract values that are taken from Advent are the ones that traditionally Christians have ascribed to Advent, which is hope, peace, joy, and love.

2:05.0

But when you abstract those values outside of the historical events, they can end up meaning very different things or just things that are not actually what Advent is meant to communicate.

2:15.5

Let me use an analogy to illustrate why it's so

2:18.6

important to get this right. So Fourth of July is a, celebrates a historic event, the signing of

2:25.1

the Declaration of Independence. It is very easy to abstract from the celebration of that historical

2:30.8

event, the abstract value of patriotism.

2:40.5

The problem, though, is if you just sort of start losing the original event and just celebrate the abstract celebration of the value of patriotism, that can go in a lot of different directions,
