Today we celebrate day five of Advent as we remember the coming of Jesus as a baby and we look forward to his second

coming.

Did you know that the traditional color of Advent is purple?

That's right.

You might be thinking, why purple?

Purple isn't a Christmas color like red or green.

Let me tell you a little story about the color purple.

Purple fabric and clothing used to be so outrageously expensive and cost so much money

that only the kings and queens were able to buy it.

Fabric makers would dye their clothes in purple dye. The purple

dye came from mollusks that were found in the sea. The mollusks would produce a dye that turned

purple. It took 9,000 mollusks just to make one tiny gram of purple dye. That is why purple fabric cost so much money.

If you saw someone wearing purple clothing, then you knew they must be very important, such as a

king or a queen. As the years went by, the color purple became known as the color associated with royalty, with kings and queens.

The queen of England, Queen Elizabeth I, even made a law that forbid anyone who wasn't royalty from wearing the color purple.

The color of Advent and the Advent candles we light during Advent are purple because the color

purple reminds us that the true king of kings Jesus came and lived among us and is one day returning for us. When the angel

Gabriel appeared to Mary, he said, He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most

High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the

house of Jacob forever. His kingdom will never end.
