So let's jump straight in.

0:31.1

Adrenal insufficiency is where the adrenal glands do not produce enough steroid hormones, particularly cortisol and

0:40.2

aldosterone. Steroids are essential for life, making the condition life-threatening.

0:47.8

Let's start by talking about glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. The adrenalocytes produce two types of steroid hormones.

0:58.6

Cortisol, which is a glucocorticoid, and aldosterone, which is a mineralocorticoid.

1:08.2

Glucocorticoids, like cortisol, help the body to cope with stress.

1:13.5

Cortisol has several actions in the body.

1:16.7

It increases alertness, inhibits the immune system and reduces inflammation,

1:23.7

inhibits bone formation, raises blood glucose levels, increases metabolism and supports

1:32.0

cardiovascular function like heart rate, blood pressure and the cardiac output. Mineralocorticoids

1:41.3

like aldosterone help regulate the balance of electrolytes and the blood pressure.

1:47.4

They act on the nephrons in the kidneys to increase sodium reabsorption from the distal tubule,

1:55.4

increase potassium secretion from the distal tubule,

1:59.2

and increase hydrogen secretion from the distal tubule and increase hydrogen secretion from the collecting ducks.

2:04.6

The key things to remember are that aldosterone causes more sodium to be reabsorbed and retained

2:11.2

in the body and more potassium to be secreted in the urine.

2:17.8
