One of the reasons I do what I do here on the Dr. Laura program is ultimately to protect

children.

I wish there didn't need to be foster care because so many parents are abusive or neglectful.

I wish there was no need for relatives to step in and take over his parents because of

drug use and abandonment.

I want people to choose their spouses wisely, be circumspect about women with whom they

have children, and to have good marriages and parent lovingly so that kids don't end

up needing to try to fit into some other family.

Because once kids are in these situations, it can be a losing battle, especially if they're

older.

It's sad to say, it doesn't mean anywhere near a hundred percent, but it's often difficult

for older children to get adopted.

Most people want cute little babies.

And when the older children are adopted, it's usually not without them having problems.

Maurice was adopted at age 14 after his parents chose drugs and prostitution over him.

His adoptive parents have lovingly steered him toward the right path.

He was able to graduate high school and move on to a prestigious university, but the influence

of his chaotic biological family is pulling him off course.
