I think we have to redefine what we mean are foundational for adolescents.

What are the foundational components that are important for adolescent readers?

Over the past couple years, we've gotten a number of listener questions like this.

I'm a high school English teacher

who has many, many students who read and write far below grade level. Are there any strategies

specifically for secondary students? And questions like this, what's the best program for

helping older readers, fourth grade and above? Well, today I'm excited to kick off a new mini-series devoted specifically to adolescent literacy.

There's a literacy crisis in middle school, too.

High school, too.

And so we have to take this both and approach.

You know, the reality is that of the 75% of the kids that we have that are struggling,

particularly in the upper grades, 90% of them are instructional casualties. Like, they were never
