Summary

Putin's mission has failed — he controls only slightly more stolen Ukraine land than he did in 2014. And the war may be headed to a conclusion much like the end of the Korean War, a "frozen conflict." Adm. James Stavridis joins Charlie Sykes on today's podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to the Bullwark Podcast. I'm Charlie Sacks. There's a lot going on today, but I feel

0:13.5

we've been remiss by not talking about what's been going on in Ukraine more often. So we are

0:18.9

extremely lucky today to be joined by Admiral James Davretis, who is a retired four-star

0:25.7

naval officer. He is a former NATO Supreme Allied commander. And his latest book is

0:31.2

To Risk at All, Nine Conflicts in the Crucible of Decision. He is a columnist for Bloomberg,

0:37.7

former Dean at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. Admiral, thank you

0:42.0

so much for joining us this morning. It's my pleasure, Charlie. So let's start off with the most important

0:47.7

0:56.8

What is your read right now? To answer the question, I think you've got to begin with

1:01.5

1:09.4

BFF, best friend forever, President Xi, that hey, this thing will be over in three or four days,

1:16.0

1:23.3

decapitate the Zelensky regime, probably literally, and completely control this vast nation,

1:31.7

the size of Texas, grab all its resources, pull it into the Russian orbit. By any measure,

1:38.1

he has failed. And he has failed badly. So that brings us immediately to the present. He still

1:45.2

holds on to 15% of the country that he controlled since the 2014 invasion, including most notably Crimea.

1:56.6

The only thing he's been able to add to that suite of stolen land, if you will, is about five percent.

2:04.8

So today he sits on about 20% total of Ukraine. I would call that a failure, but it begs the

2:13.6

question, Charlie, what happens next? And I think here, despite all of the immense and I think

2:20.7

very successful efforts to arm the Ukrainians, despite their extraordinary fighting spirit, despite

2:27.2

the remarkable leadership of Vladimir Zelensky, in spite of all that, I think it's very difficult

2:34.5

militarily to envision a scenario in which the Ukrainians can literally push the Russians out of
