Summary

After one year on Wrangel Island, the five members of the expedition are alarmed to realize that the supply ship that was scheduled to relieve them won’t be coming. Winter has arrived early, the ocean is freezing over, and the ship won’t be able to make it through the ice. With dwindling food supplies, the team has to make a last-ditch effort to go in search of help. Now, Ada Blackjack finds herself alone with the expedition’s dying leader, Lorne Knight – and she must learn new survival skills if she has any hope of keeping him alive.

This is the story of how Ada Blackjack became the sole survivor of the Wrangel Island expedition.

0:16.5	Captain Joe Bernard sprints down the starboard side of the 100-foot schooner, the teddy bear.
0:23.2	His wire rim glasses jiggle on his nose with each step. The frigid air burns his lungs.
0:31.9	The ship is at a standstill, 50 miles from the nearest shore. It's early September 1922,
0:39.7	and the Arctic Ocean is already freezing over. Ice surrounds the schooner on all sides.
0:46.7	And seconds ago Bernard heard an awful screeching sound. Ice unmetall. He's running towards the sound
0:56.0	to assess the damage. Bernard has been hired to sail from Nome, Alaska to the remote
1:02.4	wrangle island where a small group of explorers are awaiting supplies. Bernard knows this could be a
1:09.1	life or death mission for the men on wrangle. They'll need food, ammo, and other supplies that
1:15.2	teddy bear is carrying. Just rather long, Arctic winter ahead. For days, Bernard and his crew
1:22.2	have been trying to find a way through the ice pack with little to show for it. He's never seen
1:28.5	this much ice so early in the season. Bernard reaches the stern of the boat where cluster of crew
1:35.5	members are gathered, looking over the back. The first mate turns and greets Bernard with a grimace.
1:42.4	Sounded like the propeller, Bernard nods. If the propeller is damaged, the ship won't be able to
1:50.3	generate enough power to push through the ice. They'll be stranded, unable to do anything but drift
1:57.2	as more and more ice forms, locking them in place. But Bernard refuses to expect the worst.
2:05.7	We won't know until we have a look. The crew members quickly rig up ropes. Bernard and the
2:12.1	first mate leave themselves over the side of the ship, using the ropes to climb down to the ice below.
2:19.0	Kneeling on an ice flow, the two men peer at the propeller. Its blades are bent and twisted,
2:26.0	crushed by the pressure of the ice. It looks bad, but not as bad as Bernard feared. He turns to the
2:33.7	first mate. We can fix this. Yes, then let's head home. We can't give up just yet. Those men on
2:41.2	the wrangle are counting on us. Captain, look around. It's nothing but solid ice. We'll never make it.
