Summary

Friends, at the heart of what St. Ignatius of Loyola teaches in the “Spiritual Exercises” is the idea of detachment. If we are to do the will of God, then we have to become detached from the worldly goods to which we are addicted. A basic principle of this detachment is “agere contra,” which is Latin simply for “to act against.” The idea is simple: if you are attached or addicted to some worldly good, then the best thing is to act against it—to press, aggressively even, in the opposite direction.

0:42.5	Peace be with you. Friends, a couple summers ago I had the great privilege of
0:46.2	visiting in connection with a film we're making. The sites connected to St.
0:50.8	Ignatius of Loyola. We went to the bass country to Loyola where he was born and
0:57.0	where he recuperated from his war wounds where he had his great conversion
1:00.8	experience. We went to Mothsa Ra that wonderful Benedictine monastery where he
1:05.8	pledged his life to Christ. We ended up in the rooms where he died in Rome right
1:11.7	next to the great church of the J. Zoo where he's buried. But for me the most
1:16.2	moving place to visit was a little cave in a town called Mount Resa. Mount
1:21.7	Resa is not too far from Barcelona and the young Ignatius after he's turned his
1:26.2	life over to Christ. Spends about nine months literally living in this cave in
1:33.1	utter simplicity. He had been obsessed as a young man with his appearance. He
1:42.1	wanted to be a courier. He wanted to cut a dashing figure. So trying to turn
1:48.5	away from that he kind of let himself go. He let his hair grow, let his fingernails
1:52.8	grow. He lived in poverty and simplicity and fasting for those nine months. He was
1:59.7	often consumed with lust and so he lived in a austere celibacy for that time.
