The first five years that the comic was out, it was absolutely not successful. And I kept my day job for a good reason.

And it wasn't until people started emailing me. It was sort of the dawn of email and I put my email address in the strip which was you know groundbreaking at the time it sounds funny now and people would the strangers would email me which it was also weird right the strangers would email you

you, you know in the dawn of email that was weird.

And they would say, hey, we like it when Dilbert's at work.

We like it when he's interacting with his boss and his coworkers. We don't like it when he's doing general stuff.

And most of the comic was general stuff. It was only once in a while he went to work.

And I thought, well, you know, heck with this artistic integrity, I'm going to give

the audience what they want and that's what it all took off.
