Summary

As the longest day arrives in the northern hemisphere, Jeremy, Nadia and Keir ponder our obsession with the great outdoors. How did parks become political? Why do we seek out the strenuous discomforts of hiking, camping and cold water? And what does Jem have against music festivals?

They look back on a century of changing attitudes to the outdoors, from radical Edwardian cyclists and the woo-woo ways of the Kindred of the Kibbo Kift to the modern obsession with lidos and wild swimming. Plus, pastoral music from Peter Gabriel, Arthur Russell and Bow Wow Wow.

Books: Robert Blatchford – Merrie England / Richard King – The Lark Ascending

Music: Shonen Knife – ‘Cycling Is Fun’ / Ewan McColl – ‘The Manchester Rambler’ / Peter Gabriel – ‘Solsbury Hill’ / Kate Bush – ‘Running Up That Hill’ / Vaughan Williams – ‘The Lark Ascending’ / Muckers – ‘Out Of County’ / Bow Wow Wow – ‘Wild In The Country’ / Blur – ‘Parklife’ / The Small Faces – ‘Itchycoo Park’ / Pink Floyd – ‘Grantchester Meadows’ / Arthur Russell – ‘Let’s Go Swimming’ / Mark Stewart & Maffia – ‘Jerusalem’

ride because we have to record a show about the outdoors. So that gives you the answer.

1:03.9

It's getting into summer. People's eyes are turning to the outdoors. It's when Britain shakes off

1:10.0

its rain, sodden, endosiness and ventures out. Of course, we are willing to sacrifice our afternoon

1:20.4

to enhance your enjoyment of the outdoors dear listener by giving you some context. That's why I think

1:27.5

we should talk about it. What about you, Nadia? Yeah, so like you, I'm really interested in this

1:32.8

time of year here. I think it's particular to I think this part of the world that you can really see

1:39.7

people emerge, like flowers, budding or something. It really makes me feel like people are part of nature

1:46.7

because yeah, come May, June, everybody wants to be outdoors. We can see it. We can see it in

1:51.5

people's behaviour. We can see it in people's choice of activities. We also can see it in cultural

1:56.7

production and how people talk about the outdoors becomes different, whether it's like in magazines

2:02.2

or music that's produced, etc. But of course, when people go outdoors, it then necessitates this

2:08.7

discussion about where are we allowed to be outdoors, because it's one thing to be in your garden,

2:14.0

with your eyes slowly listening to ACFM, and another thing to be in a park or in a mountain,

2:20.8

or in other kinds of public spaces, walking in the countryside, which I think we're going to

2:25.5

talk about, because there's obviously that's political because it comes with where we're allowed

2:29.6

to be and where we're not allowed to be. So that's why I'm interested about talking about the outdoors.

2:34.3

What about you, Jeremy? Well, it's interesting for all the reasons you say,
