Summary

Vanessa and Casper explore the theme of accompaniment in chapter thirty-three of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This week we discuss Dumbledore's solitude, Snape's courage, and an inspiring scene for Sex and the City. Throughout the episode we consider the question: Does accompaniment have to be passive?

Thanks to Ingrid for this week’s voicemail! Next week we’re reading Chapter 34, The Forest Again, through the theme of reunion.

Before I moved to America Vanessa, I was a young professional in London and you know those movies where it's like I was thinking of Anne Hathaway in the Devil Weas Prada where she's like young and she feels like she's got it all together and she's like working for her boss and it's great because she finally figured out all the systems.

2:33.0

I was that person but after a little while I was starting to feel a little bit stuck and just not quite sure where I was going and what my professional life would look like and that comes around now and then when you're like what am I doing with my life.

2:47.0

And at that moment I met this wonderful woman called Charlotte who was about 10 years older than me and I was in my early 20s so she was maybe early mid 30s my age now.

2:56.0

And we were working together on a project and I kept being late for meetings and you know London's a big city and you can get stuck on the tube or whatever but at some point she sat me down and she was like what's going on with you being late all the time.

3:10.0

And I was like oh I'm just you know me and like London and she wasn't buying it and after well she just said Casper I'm going to be your coach because you're never going to ask for help.

3:23.0

And I was both a little bit like astonished that she just said it but more than that I was relieved because here was someone who was kind of inserting themselves into my life wanting to help me and she was so wonderful as a mentor and as a coach and help me explore my kind of interest in spirituality that I hadn't really talked about anyone with.

3:44.0

And so a huge part of my life is indebted to her because I don't think I would have gone to divinity school I wouldn't have met you I wouldn't have been doing this podcast had she not said I'm going to sit down with you and I'm going to help you figure some things out.

3:56.0

And for me that was one of the most beautiful experiences of accompaniment because it wasn't that she was trying to get me somewhere specific.

4:04.0

She was just going to sit next to me and ask me questions and share resources until I figured out what I needed to figure out for myself but I knew that she would be there next to me while I was figuring it out.

4:17.0

And that experience of accompaniment of being loved into the person that you can become not in a software in a strong way.

4:27.0

I just think it's the most wonderful gift that we can give each other and it's something one day I hope to be able to pass on to other people.

4:36.0

I find that like dauntingly admirable I am now in my late 30s and I cannot imagine looking at someone and being like I'm going to fix this I just like can't imagine being that confident or ever seeing someone so well and I think that you know I don't know Charlotte but that sounds like her gift that she was able to see you and I'm always afraid that I'm not seeing someone properly.
