Good evening from Washington. I'm Catherine Rampel in for Chris Hayes. Tonight, I want to begin by taking us all back to a gentler, simpler time. January 21st, 2017, which was Donald Trump's second day as president. That day, he sent out his press secretary, Sean Spicer,

for an unscheduled six-minute press conference to yell at journalists,

who had the gall to accurately report on the relatively small size of Trump's inaugural crowd.

Yesterday, at a time when our nation and the world was watching the peaceful transition of power,

and as the president said, the transition and the balance of power from Washington to the

citizens of the United States, some members of the media were engaged in deliberately

false reporting.

Photographs of the inaugural proceedings were intentionally framed in a way

in one particular tweet to minimize the enormous support that had gathered on the national mall.

Inaccurate numbers involving crowd size were also tweeted. This was the largest audience to

ever witness an inauguration, period. These attempts to lessen the enthusiasm of the inauguration

are shameful and wrong.

So obviously, Sean Spicer's claims were absurd here. His blown-up, selectively cropped photos of the

inauguration crowd were misleading. The whole scene was so silly, it spawned one of SNL's most memorable impersonations.

As you know, President Trump announced his Supreme Court pick on the national TV today when he

entered the room. The crowd greeted him with a standing ovation, which lasted a full 15 minutes.

And you can check the tape on that.

Everyone was smiling.

Everyone was happy.

The men all had erections.

And every single one of the women was ovulating left and right.

That was the very first White House fight, massaging the ego of the most powerful and yet somehow also most insecure man in the world.
