Summary

This week on Unorthodox, we’re shaking the lulav and the etrog and celebrating Sukkot.   First, we’re learning all about the global history of the etrog thanks to Be Fruitful: The Etrog in Jewish Art, Culture, and History. We talk to Warren Klein, one of the collection’s editors, and Jenna Weissman Joselit, a favorite Unorthodox guest and contributor to the collection.  Next, we talk with Roger Studley, the founder of Urban Moshav, a nonprofit dedicated to creating Jewish co-housing communities, about Berkeley Moshav and the role that co-housing plays in building community.  Finally, we’re re-sharing the 2018 trip our former editor Sophia Steinert-Evoy’s took to the only commercial etrog farm in the U.S., in Exeter, CA, to meet the non-Jews running it.  We’re heading back on the road! Hi, I just finished listening to the episode on Apologies and I did not like it and I apologize

0:15.4

for not liking it, but during the year you asked for callers and listeners to call in

0:23.9

with their apologies and granted you don't want to give people's names out, but I think

0:31.3

that your listeners would like to hear what other listeners are apologizing for. I felt

0:38.8

that the story from Mr. Davenport was unnecessary on this particular occasion, so I just wanted

0:51.1

you to know how I felt. And I'll keep listening, but I did not enjoy today's episode.

1:21.2

I'm still so sorry for everything. I just want to apologize again and again and again.

The Toshuva keeps on Toshuving. Today on the show we're bringing you an interview with Warren

about the Etrog, that citrusy thing that we need for Sukod, a holiday we're about to step into.

The collection of essays has the wonderful title Be Fruitful, the Etrog in Jewish art,

culture and history. Also, I want mail from all the Yiddishists out there calling it an

S-Rog. I've been waiting for an S-Rog book. An S-Rog movie with Timothy Chalamet as the

Etrog would have been better, but okay, a book is fine. I assume it's an animated movie or

is he actually just putting it on an S-Rog costume? No, by the way, if we needed four actors to play

the four species, our bottoming name was Sukod. I nominate Timothy Chalamet as the S-Rog.

2:08.1

Who do you feel as a Lou Love? First, I think you just say what the four species are,

2:12.2

for our casting director, for our casting call. The four species are the S-Rog.

2:17.8

The Lou Love, the Arava and the Hadassim, the Etrog, which has a smell and a flavor,

the Hadass, which has a smell but no flavor, the Lou Love, which has flavor but no smell and poor
