First up, we're going to speak to Professor and Social Justice Advocate Ruth Wilson Gilmore of the City University of New York.

She was the subject of a recent New York Times magazine article entitled, Is Prison

Necessary?

As reported in the article in the United States, we have more than 2 million people sitting in prison,

and most of them are black or brown and poor.

Professor Gilmour argues for abolishing prisons and replacing them with social systems of support that

will deter people from committing crime in the first place.

It's an ambitious idea that we'll break down for you in the first half of the show.

In the second half of the show,

we welcome journalist Adam Higginbotham.

We've talked a lot about the dangers of nuclear power
