to wait for her to take office before it hires a new president. Plus, more Democrats backtrack

from climate commitments as Pennsylvania backs away from a regional cap-and-trade system,

and Massachusetts lawmakers consider making its 2030 emissions targets voluntary.

Virginia Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger won't be sworn into office for two months, but she's already making official requests of at least one state board wading into this ongoing dispute between the University of Virginia in Charlottesville

and the Trump administration, which had been investigating the school's diversity and equity

initiatives, whether they might have violated federal law. In June, the president of UVA, James Ryan,

stepped down under pressure, and the school's board has been searching

for a replacement.

But last week, Spanberger wrote in a letter to the school's board, quote, I urge you to refrain

from rushing the search process and from selecting the finalists for the presidency or president

until the board is at full compliment.
