Summary

The presence of Jesus will change us when we are aware that He is in our midst. Rather than moving on with our life, we want to connect intimately with Him. In this message we look at someone in Scripture who shows us what it looks like to Abide with Jesus.

Abiding means sitting at the feet of Jesus

Abiding means listening to Jesus

Abiding means removing whatever is distracting you from Jesus

Well, let me take you back a bit, and for some of you, it's more than just a bit, but let's go back to when you were 16 years old. You remember that? You're about to take your driver's test. Maybe for some of you, you don't remember your driver's test. I will never forget my driver's test. Because I was nervous, like the biggest thing in your life when you're 16, at least what I remember, is making sure that you don't fail the driver's test because all your friends know you're taking it. You don't want to show up to school the next day and be like, I still can't drive. So I remember getting in the car and I'm just, I'm a little bit nervous, hands are shaking a little bit, but I'm ready. Like I've taken the classes, I've put in the hours, I'm ready. I sit in the driver's seat and I've got this random guy next to me with the clipboard ready to grade my every move. And I put my keys in the ignition. I start the car, take a deep breath. And I'm like, okay, let's go. So I put my foot on the pedal to drive and all of a sudden the car just goes rung-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-r. I was like, what just happened?

So it felt like a glitch, so I was like, okay, let me just try it again.

1:04.0

So I put my foot on the ignition and the same thing happened,

1:07.0

and it didn't go anywhere.

1:10.0

So I'm sure I had this extremely

1:12.1

concerned look on my face, but I just told my instructor, I was like, sir, I think the car

1:17.3

is malfunctioning. And he's like, hey, are you serious? And I'm like, yes, it's not working. I've

1:25.1

done all the things that we're not going. It's not working. He's like, are you serious? And I was like, yes, it's not working. I've done all the things. We're not going. It's not working. He's like,

1:28.2

he's like, are you serious? And I was like, yes, it's not working. We're not going anywhere.

1:32.7

He goes, son, you haven't put it in drive. It was just the worst way to start the test because

1:38.8

I was like I feel like I failed before it's even over. And yet, and this makes me terrified to drive, he passed me. I'm like,

1:48.0

what in the world? And as I think about that, I thought I had done everything. I thought I had

1:54.0

everything necessary for me to move forward, but I hadn't done the one thing necessary for me to move forward. That's kind of what

2:04.9

we've been talking about these past couple weeks, as we're in week three of Abide. Week one, a couple

2:09.9

weeks ago, JP talked about how in church we've been taught to do all these Christian things. We've been

2:16.2

taught to read the Bible, go to church, sing worship songs. We've been taught to do all these Christian things. We've been taught to read the Bible, go to church, sing

2:19.4

worship songs. We've been taught to do all these things. But just because you do all those things

2:24.5

doesn't actually mean you are a Christian because you can do all these things on the outside

2:29.6

and you can seem like you're one thing, but on the inside, you're not. And he had this example of, he had two limes.

2:36.3

And there's a fake lime and there's a real lime.

2:39.2

And they both look like limes, but they're not limes.

2:42.6

Even though this one on the outside seems like it's a lime, it's not.
