Summary

This rereleased 2022 episode of Abide revisits Moses 7—a chapter that expands the brief biblical mention of Enoch into a rich, prophetic narrative. In the Pearl of Great Price, Enoch’s visionary experiences with God profoundly influence Latter-day Saint understandings of the Father’s compassion, character, and relationship to humanity. This conversation explores how Moses 7 shapes key themes within Latter-day Saint thought. At the time of the original recording, the discussion was hosted by Joseph Stuart, then the public communications specialist at the Maxwell Institute, alongside Research Fellow Kristian Heal. Together, they examined each week’s Come, Follow Me scripture block—not to offer a full lesson, but to highlight meaningful ideas that support the Maxwell Institute’s mission to “inspire and fortify Latter-day Saints in their testimonies of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and engage the world of religious ideas.” The episode features special guest Terryl Givens, coauthor with Fiona Givens of The God Who Weeps and, more recently, The Doors of Faith in the Maxwell Institute’s Living Faith series with Deseret Book.

Christian, before we ask Terrell a few questions about Moses 7, what else is going on in the chapter beyond what I said

in the introduction? Well, the story of Enoch starts earlier in Moses chapter 6. And when we read Enoch's

1:01.7

call in Moses 6, 27 to 30, we can't help thinking of Doctrine of Covenants 1. God says to Enoch,

1:08.8

I'm angry with this people and my fierce anger is kindled against

1:12.1

them. Why? They have gone astray, and they deny me, and have sought their own counsel in the dark.

1:17.5

In the first section of the doctrine and covenants, God's anger is similarly described,

1:22.0

and the anger of the Lord is kindled, and his sword is bathed in heaven, and it shall fall upon

the inhabitants of the earth.

1:27.8

Why? Because they have strayed from mine ordinances. They seek not the Lord to establish

his righteousness, but every man walketh in his own way. The consequences of such behavior

were clear to God. Enoch's call, like Joseph's, was God's response to a world that was about

to fall into calamity. God's response was

1:46.4

not only to call a prophet to preach repentance, but to call a prophet to build Zion. Zion is

the antithesis of an antidote to a world descending into a pandemic of self-absorption. It seems
