Imagine traveling to a far away country, like on the opposite side of the globe.

0:12.1

You've been pumped, you've been prepping for this trip, you've got your passport,

0:15.9

you've got your extra underwear, you have your snacks for the flight, the whole deal.

0:22.3

What do you expect when the plane lands and you finally arrive after a million hour flight? At least you have a

0:29.8

decent podcast to listen to to past the time, but you finally land, the doors open, you walk off,

0:36.4

and what do you expect? You expect it to be exotic,

1:02.2

The people look the same.

1:04.4

The air smells the same.

1:06.9

The buildings look the same.

1:08.4

Everything's in the exact same language where you left.

1:11.8

It's like you never left at all.

1:15.8

How could two cultures separated by thousands of miles and oceans and mountains and

1:25.2

unnavigable rivers end up being exactly the same.

1:31.7

If this were to happen to you, you would face what cosmologists call a horizon problem.

1:38.9

How could a culture beyond your horizon end up looking the same as your own.

1:46.2

In order for that to happen, there needs to be contact, there needs to be trade, there

1:52.5

needs to be a lot of time for the two cultures to interact, to meld together into a single

2:00.4

unified culture that despite their differences,

2:03.5

their distances, they are essentially the same. That takes time. When we look out at the universe,
