Summary

What is the cosmological constant? How is the expansion of the universe related to quantum fields? How does a vacuum energy produce accelerated expansion? I discuss these questions and more in today’s Ask a Spaceman!

Let's say you fall off a ladder.

0:07.8

Don't worry, you won't get hurt in this mental game in this scenario.

0:13.1

It's just for pretend, but you're going to fall off a ladder.

0:15.8

As you fall of the ladder, what do you feel?

0:17.8

You feel the pull of gravity.

0:20.8

For a moment, you're hanging in midair.

0:23.4

You feel that sensation of free fall. The gravity of the earth is accelerating you down and then

0:29.6

bam, you actually slam into the ground and get hurt. Ask yourself, what would happen if that ladder

0:36.7

were, I don't know, on a beach next to the ocean?

0:40.7

You would get hurt.

0:41.4

You know, the sand might cushion your fall, but you would still fall.

0:44.3

You'd still hit the ground with the exact same speed.

0:46.9

What if you took that exact same ladder and brought it up to the top of Mount Everest?

0:53.7

Like, now you're in base camp, you're all the way at the top.

0:55.9

You're at the sum of the highest point on Earth.

0:57.6

You put that ladder up.

0:59.3

You climb up the ladder so you're the tallest thing in the world.

1:03.5

And then you fall off the ladder and you hit the ground.

1:06.3

Right there, the peak of Mount Everest.

1:09.9

I'm not going to ask why you would do that, but it's for the

1:13.2

purposes of this metaphor. When you fall the distance off the ladder, when you hit the ground,

1:21.6

whether it's on the top of Mount Everest or on a nice, warm sandy beach, you're going to feel
