Terms and conditions apply. Well, welcome to Draft Day. Tonight is the NFL draft. The Jets currently on the seventh overall pick. Of course, that could change if they decide to trade up or trade down. Obviously, a big day on the NFL calendar, a chance to add a premium young player to the Jets roster. But just as importantly, or perhaps more importantly, we're going to begin to find out what Aaron Glenn and Darren Mucci value. That's what we're going to talk about on today's show. The draft is obviously important from the standpoint that, you know, you're hoping to add a premium player. You know, if you do it well, you get the chance to add a star player at a discount price because the first four years of a player's career, they play under a cheap contract.

For the rookies who enter the league, they don't have a lot of leverage. They have to sign a relatively inexpensive deal. So it's advantageous for a team. But when you have a first-year head

coach and a first-year GM, it's the first real opportunity you have to see what they value

2:00.1

and how effective they are

2:02.5

leading your team.

2:03.8

You could go back five years.

2:05.7

That was Joe Douglas's first draft as Jets General Manager.

2:08.7

Douglas was Darren Mugi's predecessor.

2:11.6

And the first pick Douglas made actually spoke volumes about what he valued with the team.

2:17.8

The Jets drafted Backeye Bechtin 11th overall.

2:21.3

And there were two aspects that really spoke volumes about the way Douglas operated.

2:26.0

The first is that Douglas's first pick was for a left tackle prospect,

2:29.8

and it showed that Douglas had a commitment toward building the offensive line,

2:32.8

that he was going to throw a lot of resources into the offensive line. The second thing it showed was that

2:38.2

Douglas valued physical traits. Douglas valued theoretical ceiling more than he valued

2:43.2

technique, more than he valued production, because Bexton was viewed as a really high-sealing

2:49.0

prospect. He was a guy with great physical tools. And if he put it together at the left tackle position, he had as high of a ceiling as any tackle prospect in the draft, opposed to say Tristan Werf's, who the Jets passed on, who was viewed as a safer pick, but a guy with a lower ceiling. Now, both of these kind of show you the flaws in Douglas. He may have valued offensive line, but he wasn't very good at putting one together.
