Summary
A hilarious story in which a mining camp dog shares a love-hate relationship with the motley members of the mining camp until the day a beautiful woman arrives in a coach and shows the dog some real attention.
Like Mark Twain, Harte spent time in the northern California mining camps and drew dozens of stories from his experiences there.

| 0:34.7 | Hagenorn and today's story A Yellow Dog by Brett Hart. I never knew why in the |
| 0:42.1 | Western States of America a yellow dog should be |
| 0:44.8 | proverbially considered the acme of canine degradation and incompetency, nor |
| 0:49.8 | why the possession of one should seriously affect the social standing of its possessor. |
| 0:55.1 | But the fact being established, I think we accepted it at Rattler's Ridge without question. |
| 1:00.6 | The matter of ownership was more difficult to settle, and although the dog I have in my mind at the present writing attached himself impartially and equally to everyone in camp, no one ventured to exclusively claim him, while after the perpetration of any canine atrocity, |
| 1:16.1 | everybody repudiated him with indecent haste. |
| 1:19.7 | Well, I can swear he hasn't been near our shanty for weeks. |
| 1:24.0 | Or the retort, he was last seen coming out of your cabin. |
| 1:28.0 | Express the eagerness with which Rattler's ridge washed its hands of any responsibility. Yet he was by no means a common dog, nor even an |
