There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man.

It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity.

It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition,

and it lies between the pit of man's fears

and the summit of his knowledge.

This is the dimension of imagination.

It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone.

The Twilight Zone. The episode that we'll be discussing tonight is one that doesn't necessarily always come up in

conversations about the show. But I think the interesting thing is that despite this, its core

concept seems to have taken on a life of its own.

It really has influenced a lot of things that have come after it.

If you've ever seen the Truman Show, for example, you will see a similar kind of story,

but with its own flavour.

And also, countless other science fiction and fantasy shows have had stories where a character has arrived at a situation,

where what they think of as their real life is revealed to be a delusion or a fiction.

An episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer springs to mind where the main character wakes up in a hospital where the doctors tell her that her life as a vampire slayer is actually just all in her head.

So it is one of those great story templates where I think it can be used over and over again with different

characters in different shows because there are so many variations you can use.

Did the Twilight Zone do it first?

Probably I can't really say that for sure but I certainly think it did it well.
