I was just looking at this tremendous crowd and thinking about almost exactly 40 years

ago, I had my first and really only real date with Jim Elliott, and it was here at Moody

Bible Institute.

We were students at Wheaton College, and he had asked me for a date to go to a game

or something in the fall, and I had accepted and then discovered that there was going to

be a Bible study that same night.

And I told Jim that I'd really rather go to the Bible study, so I was breaking the date.

He said, well, you don't need to break the date.

We could go to the Bible study together, and I said, no, that would be too distracting.

So everybody in the dormitory thought I was really out of my tree, because Jim Elliott

was a very desirable young man who never asked anybody for a date.

I seemed to be the first person he had ever thought of asking.

So I blew my one and only chance, I thought.

And then at the end of April, I think it was in 1948, he told me that there was a missionary

conference at Moody Church, and he would like me to go to that to hear one of the daughters
