Earlier this month the Court of Arbitration for Sport, an international court for

sports governance, rejected a challenge from trans-identifying swimmer

Leah Thomas to overturn their policies

that prevent males from competing against females in elite swimming events.

Thomas is the male University of Pennsylvania Swimmer who won the national championship in women's

swimming.

He hoped to compete in the 2024 Olympics, but the policy issued by World Aquatics, the body

that governs elite swimming competitions, prohibits a male who experience

unsurpassed puberty after the age of 12 to participate in elite women swimming events.

Thomas was a mediocre collegiate swimmer

when competing against other males

before joining the women's team.

Women deserve the safety and the opportunity

of an even playing field, and the court's decision

ensures both, for now at least, even in this strange new world.

World Aquatics celebrated the court's decision saying, quote, we believe it's a major step forward

in our efforts to protect women's sport.

Well, it's more of avoiding a major step backward,

but still, let's hope this kind of sanity continues.
