They're all names that come to mind when we think of inspirational

gardeners that have influenced the gardening landscape that we know and love today. I'm sure you've got a favourite of your own that you continue to turn to for inspiration. And here at the RHS, we love to celebrate those gardeners that came before us and paved the way for our own gardening journeys.

I found that inspiration can come from a range of designers.

For example, many years ago I stumbled across Jill Billington,

whose use of topiary and hedges in small gardens really pushed all my gardening buttons.

Or the late Hank Gerritsen, who was a Dutch designer who was friends with Pierre

Udolp and helped kick off the new perennials movement.

I remember being really inspired by visiting a garden he designed at Waltham Place down

in Berkshire.

The way he wove wild and cultivated plants together really captured my imagination.

And that links nicely actually to one of the garden designers whose

life and enduring influence we're going to be exploring today, William Robinson. He was described
