0:19.6	And I truly cannot believe we are still talking about this, but perhaps the most famous
0:24.7	case in true crime history, or at least true crime podcast history, is that of Adnan
0:30.0	Saeed.
0:31.0	As a young man, he was convicted of the 1999 killing of his ex-girlfriend Hay Menli when
0:36.5	the two were both in high school, but he has always maintained his innocence.
0:40.5	His case was the subject of the first season of the breakout hit serial, which in many
0:45.1	ways set the stage for this entire genre.
0:48.7	In September of last year, however, a Baltimore Circuit judge Melissa Finn vacated Saeed's
0:53.6	conviction.
0:54.6	It came five days after Baltimore prosecutors had filed a motion to vacate.
0:58.9	The state's attorney, Marilyn Mosby, said in that motion that, quote, the state no longer
1:03.7	has confidence in the integrity of the conviction.
1:06.9	In part because after a year-long re-investigation, they had found new information, including
1:12.3	a set of alternative suspects.
1:14.9	After the release, the state had 30 dates to decide if they wanted to pursue a new trial
1:19.5	against Saeed, which they ultimately declined to do.
1:23.0	However, that's not the end of the story.
1:25.3	In the wake of the overturned conviction, the family of Hay Menli filed an appeal asking
1:30.4	for a redo of the hearing, arguing that the court had not given Hay Men's brother Young
