Emily DeReeves was 26 years old. Her husband, Jack, was a 52-year-old former Army Sergeant, now working as a painter.

Once Amalita arrived in Texas, Jack Reeves kept his promise and started sending

Amelita's family $250 a month. A small fortune compared to the $3 a month
