Summary

Floyd McKissick, one of the major leaders of the civil rights movement, had an audacious, lifelong dream. He wanted to build a city — from scratch — that would create economic opportunities for Black people and be sustained by the wealth they created. It was called Soul City. And although it's been largely forgotten, he almost pulled it off.

0:09.2	in the Derek Chauvin trial, and we know that a lot of y'all turned to us in moments like

0:14.9	And we wanted to point you to some of our previous coverage.
0:18.3	Last year, we published an episode titled A Decade of Watching Black People Die.
0:22.6	We published it not long after George Floyd's killing at the hands of Officer Derek Chauvin
0:26.8	became national news.
0:28.6	We were trying to make sense of this story, which is its own singular tragedy, and yet
0:35.0	is part of this very familiar pattern.
0:37.7	Because George Floyd's killing at the hands of the police wasn't even the first story
0:42.6	like that from the Twin Cities that was captured on video that we covered on Coatswitch.
0:47.6	In 2016, we did an episode called 46 Stops, in which we were visited the many, many, many
0:54.8	times that Philando Castile was pulled over by the police while he was driving until the
0:59.9	final fatal encounter in which an officer killed him.
1:03.4	We wanted to point you to those episodes, which remain sadly as relevant as ever.
1:09.1	But one last thing, the Chauvin trial sort of carries with it the weight of all the
1:13.8	stories like it that have come before, all the frustrations, all the anger from those
1:18.5	cases.
1:20.0	And you know, while we're all trying to process this verdict, it's important to remember that
1:24.8	there's no way any single ruling can satisfy all of that.
1:29.5	A criminal conviction isn't the start of anything regarding police reform or even reimagining
