1:02.9	This is Barry Truths. I'm Hank Clibbinoff. In recent years as the audience for Barry Truths has grown,
1:10.2	I've been asked how I got started on these civil rights code cases. Well, for reasons I'm about
1:15.5	to explain, this seems like a perfect time to go into that. I've been teaching the Georgia
1:21.3	Civil Rights Code Cases class at Emory University since 2011 when Professor Brett Gasden and I
1:28.2	organized it. The departments of history, African American studies, American studies, and creative
1:34.0	writing all cross listed it. And the deans gave their blessing to this unique way of teaching
1:40.4	history. In that decade, I've taught 175 undergraduate students. But I'd actually started working on
1:49.9	these civil rights code cases earlier in 2008 when the director of the Center for Investigative
1:56.5	Reporting, Robert Rosenthal, asked me to work with journalists who were digging into cases of
2:02.7	unpunished racially motivated murders in the South. Now, why do I mention this? Because some of
2:09.8	the work I was fortunate to have had a small hand in back then is about to be featured in a PBS
2:17.3	frontline documentary called American Reckoning. Yeah, and get that phone somebody.
