0:00.0 | One of the brightest stars in the night sky is named Beteljuice. |
0:04.5 | It's about 650 light years away, which is pretty close in outer space terms. |
0:09.2 | And if you've gazed up into the night sky and seen the constellation Orion, |
0:13.9 | you've seen Beteljuice before. |
0:15.6 | So if you were to look up at it, you would want to start by finding the three stars |
0:19.6 | that make a nice little line that we call Orion's belt. |
0:22.4 | And then Beteljuice is, as you're looking at it, the shoulder of Orion on the left. |
0:27.8 | Emily Leveck is an astronomer at the University of Washington, |
0:31.2 | whose studies stars like Beteljuice, which is known as a red super giant, |
0:35.2 | super giant because this star is enormous, much bigger than our sun. |
0:39.9 | If you were to put Beteljuice where our sun is, it would swallow up all of the planets out past |
0:45.6 | Mars. And because it's so massive, it means that it goes through a very different sort of |
0:50.6 | life experience than our sun will. |
0:52.7 | Which brings us to why we're talking about Beteljuice right now. |
0:56.5 | In recent weeks, astronomers have noticed that Beteljuice no longer appears to be one of the |
1:02.3 | brightest stars in the night sky. There were sort of quick reports put out from people who monitor |
1:07.8 | and observe Beteljuice very frequently saying, you know, it's getting dimmer and dimmer. |
1:12.2 | It's starting to get closest to the dimest we've seen. |
1:15.5 | There's also big dedicated networks of amateur astronomers that keep very close track of the |
1:20.1 | brightness of stars like Beteljuice. And they started noticing the same thing. |
1:24.0 | When we called Emily, she was preparing for this big astronomy conference in Hawaii. |
1:30.6 | And she thought there would be a lot of buzz there about the dimming of Beteljuice. |
