Summary

This week is the penultimate episode in our six-part mini-series and today we are in for a treat!

Curatorial placement student Cara Gathern takes us into one of the most exciting but hidden spaces at Hampton Court Palace, Henry VIII’s bedroom. It may not look like a royal Tudor bedroom today, but Cara will reveal how this space has transported her to the past, and particularly to the medicinal practices of the health-obsessed Tudor king.

So I've come to Chapel Court for a little bit of quiet. All around us we've got these wonderful Tudor buildings and you can even smell the fire from the privy kitchens and it really gives us a little taste of what's to come in these spaces that we're going to be exploring.

0:52.3

So let's head off to this space that we're going to be looking at today now.

So today I'm going to be looking at a really unique space in Hampton Court Palace

1:01.0

and this is called the Bain Tower and it was built for King Henry the 8th in 1529

1:05.0

and used by Henry until about 1537 and it's in a very different state than it was when Henry was using it.

1:11.2

But originally it was built as Henry's very own private apartments. So I really love this

1:16.9

space because when I did my interview to come and do this placement at Hunter Court Palace,

1:21.0

this was one of the first spaces that I saw. This is the first kind of behind-the-scenes space

1:26.2

that I saw and on top of the fact that it links so much to the things that I'm studying at the moment

1:33.8

in terms of Henry V. 8's private spaces, his private staff and the private practices surrounding

1:38.3

them, it's also really special for me because of that link to the first time I ever came here.

1:45.0

It's so exciting that I've been able to come and talk about this and share this with you today.

1:50.0

So let's head inside to the apartments now and have a look around.

1:59.0

So we're just heading up the stairs now.

2:01.6

It's pretty dark and creepy in here at the moment.

2:05.6

So we've just gone up the stairs now. So we've just gone up the stairs now and we're now in the space which actually would have been Henry the 8's bedroom.
