Summary

In this episode, hosts Shay Rudolph and Jess Weiner talk about what being a GOOD friend really means. Do you know what a good friendship feels like? And how can you tell when your friendship has become one-sided? Most of all, what can you do to be a better friend to the people you care about. Shay and Jess are joined by Malia Baker, one of Shay’s real-life close friends and actress from Netflix’s “The Baby-Sitters Club” as well as Nickelodeon’s “Are You Afraid of the Dark”. Malia shares what she thinks a good friendship looks and feels like (on the good days and on the not-so-good days) and what she does to prioritize good friendships in her life. You can also watch full episodes of the show on The American Girl Podcast Network channel on YouTube and YouTube kids.   Producers: American Girl Talk to Jess Shay Rudolph Cloud10

And for me, a good friendship just feels like

0:54.4

pure happiness, like a warm hug when I'm with him. And every time I come away from hanging out

0:59.5

with that person, I feel actually energized rather than drained. That is really important for me.

1:05.9

Yeah, that's a really good sign. For me, a good friendship feels safe. Yeah. It feels like I could be fully who I am.

1:13.0

Yes. And I wanted to say this. I think a good friendship also feels like you can get over the

1:19.1

tough stuff together. You can communicate with them and not be scared to say things. Yeah.

1:23.4

Yeah. You know, I think when I think about what we tell girls about friendships, though, I think there's some myths that we have to bust.

1:31.7

Oh, absolutely. A little bit. What would be a myth that you think is out there around friends?

1:36.0

A massive myth for me, especially in the elementary school and middle school years, is that you have to have a best friend and you can only have one best friend, which I think is so false.

1:45.4

I growing up and still now have always had multiple really close friends. It's never been just one.

And there are also years where I don't have a super close friend at all. And I just have like
