a man who tried his best to maintain his freedom.

William Dathan Holbert, born September 12, 1979, in Saluda, North Carolina, spent most of his young years living in rural mountains on his family's small apple orchard and cattle ranch.

Attending high school in the neighboring city of Hendersonville,

William played football, was well liked by his teammates and fellow students,

and was remembered as quite gifted, though he maintained a relatively average GPA.

What he was also known for was being a bit of a troublemaker.

When he was just 17 years old, William was cited by a game warden for illegally hunting on federal land.

But because of his age and because this was his first known offense, he was fined and released without an arrest.

After graduating from high school in 1997, William Holbert then began schooling at the Blue Ridge Community College,

where he sought his associate's degree in agriculture, while also working as a landscaper,

eventually managing to start his own business in Hendersonville.

Along the way, William met and married a woman in 1998, and though they would divorce just six years later,

the pair welcomed three children into the fold. Unfortunately, it seemed like the divorce was a precursor to a troubling shift in

William's life. Declaring bankruptcy not long after the divorce and ceasing his child support payments,

William listed over $500,000 in assets, but declared he was more than $700,000 in debt.
