In the previous part, we found ourselves in Lucy's family home, where Mrs. Honeychurch and Freddie fret over Cecil Weiss's third attempt to propose to Lucy, and are surprised to

find that Lucy this time accepts. When Mr. Bebe arrives, his conversation reveals a quieter unease,

and he is disappointed about her choice, though he offers sincere blessings.

The household then slips into a giddy, performative cheerfulness, as Lucy and Cecil seem to wait for whatever

the promise of marriage is supposed to reveal. Before we begin tonight's story, let's get

ourselves ready for sleep. Start by taking a deep, relaxing breath.
