Chapter 6. The Reverend Arthur Beebe, the Reverend Cuthbert Eager, Mr. Emerson, Mr. George Emerson,

Miss Eleanor Lavish, Miss Charlotte Bartlett, and Miss Lucy Honeychurch drive out in carriages to see a view.

Italians drive them.

In the previous chapter, Lucy tries to avoid emotional turmoil by choosing a quiet morning with Charlotte

instead of an outing with the Emerson's, but Florence refuses to let her retreat.

Encounters with Miss Lavish and the chaplain Mr. Eager reveal their intrusive curiosity and moral smugness,

including troubling accusations about Mr. Emerson, which leave Lucy unsettled and disillusioned. By the end of the chapter,

she is tempted by the idea of escaping Florence altogether. Before we begin tonight's story,
