Summary

Some riders say that peg weighting doesn’t matter, that the physics of weighting the motorcycle with your feet doesn’t change from one peg to the other. On this episode, we have celebrated off-road racer and renowned rider trainer, Chris Birch,...

When it comes to riding, understanding why we do the things we do is an important part of becoming a better rider.

For instance, it's not uncommon to see a single motorcycle crash in a corner,

0:12.3

particularly with a, maybe a decreasing radius

0:14.3

corner. If you ever watch some of those videos of this happening, some riders

0:17.9

will enter the corner, then they appear to stand the bike up, lock up the

0:21.6

tires, and ride right off the road.

0:24.0

Now very likely, the reason they did it is because they didn't fully understand

0:28.2

counter steering.

0:29.2

They entered the corner, found they didn't have enough lean in it, then panicked, turned the bar into the corner, which stands the bike up, cancels the turn, then they go heading off the road, they panic, they jump on the brakes, and that just makes them go even faster, right off the road into the ditch.

So understanding why we do things and what we do makes the difference when you ride.

0:49.2

Pegwaiting is another one of those things.

0:51.4

I've heard riders say that peg weight

0:53.4

doesn't matter. Doesn't matter which peg you put the weight on because it's

0:56.9

all pushing down on the bike. Well today to talk about peg weighting we have

1:01.9

a celebrated off-road racer and renowned rider-trader

1:04.9

trader Chris Birch. We also have a physicist and rocket scientist named Mark

1:10.6

Nesbit who is a former spacecraft designer for the European Space Agency,

1:16.1

to help work through the physics of what's really happening when we're waiting a peg in

1:21.0

a corner.

1:22.0

And I got to tell you, it's not what you think. Yes, this is complicated.

1:25.6

Maybe you're going to have to rewind a few times, maybe even listen to it a couple of times,

1:28.8

but it's really, really interesting. And by the end of this, you're going to know some things that few riders do.
