The menu, as you can imagine, is ridiculous. There's an absolute plethora of roast meats and soups and pies and gravies.

There were thousands of diners and one of the great spectacles of this event was when the king's champion

challenge all the diners effectively to a fight or a duel if they dared question the authority of the king.

One of the things though though, that didn't go

quite so to plan is after the king left, things really started to break down. Obviously, a lot of

wine had been drunk, a lot of beer had been drunk. The people who had just been watching from above

broke down and started helping themselves to the food. They were rather ravenous by that point,

and they even started to take the table decorations and things as souvenirs.

some time with curator and public historian at Historic Royal Palace's Charles Varys.
