Summary

Romans 9:14 — Does God really choose who to save? How should one respond after hearing the truth about the doctrine of election? For some, this is the hardest concept to grasp in all of theology. In this sermon on Romans 9:14 titled “A Right Approach,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones explains Paul’s exclamation by first stating that one should never try to manipulate the Scripture of God to make it fit what they want it to say. He then goes on to outline several viewpoints of how people might respond after hearing the true teaching of election and salvation. In the second part of this message, Dr. Lloyd-Jones asks how someone should respond. First, they should be thankful that the apostle Paul never skirts around the issue. Just because something is difficult to grasp does not give permission to dismiss it from Scripture. One should always be careful of the inner spirit when dealing with this issue. One should never approach it with a bipartisan attitude or by debating it. Finally, one should always acknowledge that the Scripture is the word of God and the Christian must submit themselves to the whole of it even when they do not understand. Election is how God carries out his perfect plan and they should know that not all things are meant for human understanding.

We come now in our study of this epistle to the Romans to the section which starts in the

0:07.4

ninth chapter at the 14th verse. I should rather say subsection, because this is a subsection

0:14.5

of the greater whole which runs from the beginning of the ninth chapter right until the

0:20.2

end of the 11th chapter. Now I read at the beginning of the beginning of the ninth chapter right until the end of the 11th chapter.

0:23.6

Now, I read at the beginning to the end of verse 18,

0:28.5

but let me go on reading to the end of verse 24,

0:31.8

in order that we may get this particular subsection more clearly in our minds.

0:38.7

Thou wilt say then unto me, why doth he yet find fault?

0:44.3

For who hath resisted his will?

0:47.2

Nay but o men, who art thou that repliest against God?

0:51.6

Shall the thing formed, say to him that formed it, why hast thou made me thus?

0:57.4

Hath not the potter of power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel and to

1:02.7

honour and another and to dishonour? What if God, willing to show his wrath and to make his power

1:09.8

known, endured with much long suffering,

1:13.6

the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction, and that he might make known the riches of his glory

1:19.7

and the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,

1:25.3

even us whom he hath called not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles.

1:32.0

Now, the particular subsection that we are beginning to consider is that which starts at verse

1:37.8

14 and goes on in that way to the end of verse 24.

1:43.3

Now, obviously, it is essential, before we can apply our minds

1:47.1

intelligently to this subsection, it is essential that we should remember, at any rate in general,

1:54.7

the point at which we've arrived, and the truth that the apostle has already established.
