Driving through the town of Paradise on a picturesque ridge between two canyons in the hills

of northern California, you might think it's just a normal rural American town.

But if you look closer, if you know what happened here, what it once was,

everywhere you'd see the scars of a tragedy.

Like this spot right here, that's where a car burned up.

There's one there, there was a school bus here that was burned up.

Those kinds of spots when you see on the road are where vehicles go track,

caught fire and burned up.

On the 8th of November 2018, this town of almost 30,000 people was effectively wiped out

by one of the deadliest most destructive wildfires in California's history.

At least 85 people died, thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed.

That morning, what did this road look like?

It was pitchflax, thick smoke, accurate smoke, and just solid line of cars, both lanes going downhill.

There's just panic everywhere.

Steve Colotton, known as Woody, is in his 70s and he's still full of energy.

He's a former mayor of Paradise and now an elected member of the town council.

This was an elementary school, it completely burned down.

But it's all buildings, all houses, on both sides.

They're just all gone.

Now it's empty space.
