Summary

Unlike the solar cells you're used to seeing, organic photovoltaics are made of compounds that are dissolved in ink and can be printed and molded using simple techniques. The result is a low-weight, flexible, semi-transparent film that turns the energy of the sun into electricity. Hannah Bürckstümmer shows us how they're made -- and how could change the way we power the world.

You may have noticed that I'm wearing two different shoes. It probably looks funny. It definitely feels funny. But I wanted to make a point. Let's say my left

0:23.2

shoe corresponds to sustainable footprint, meaning humans consume less natural resources than

0:30.0

our planet can regenerate and emit less carbon dioxide than our forests and ocean can reabsorb.

0:37.2

That's a stable and healthy condition.

0:40.2

Today's situation is more than my other shoe.

0:43.4

It's way oversized.

At the 2nd of August in 2017,

we have already consumed all resources our planet can regenerate this year.

This is like spending all your money until the 18th of a month and then needing a credit from the bank for the rest of the time.

1:01.0

For sure, you can do this for some months in a row,

1:03.0

but if you don't change your behavior,

1:05.0

sooner or later, you will run into big problems.

1:08.0

We all know the devastating effects of this excessive exploitation,

1:13.7

global warming, rising of the sea levels, melting of the glacier and pole ice,

1:19.3

increasingly extreme climate patterns, and more. The enormity of this problem really frustrates me.

1:31.3

What frustrates me even more is that we're solutions to this, but we keep doing things like we always did.

1:34.3

Today, I want to share with you how a new solar technology

1:38.3

can contribute to a sustainable future of buildings.

1:41.3

Buildings consume about 40% of our total energy demand,

1:46.0

so tackling this consumption would significantly reduce our climate emissions.

A building designed along a sustainable principle
