Summary

We Americans may indeed be "rich" in material terms, but we suffer from what Mother Teresa calls a poverty of spirit. As we chased economic growth we closed ourselves off. We abandoned interconnectedness with other people, beings, and things. We also abandoned ourselves.   Many of the problems in our world today are visual manifestations of such abandonment. If the world isn't looking the way you want it to look right now, author Jeff Golden argues that solving our (numerous) issues starts by healing our culture-wide poverty of spirit.     Here's a preview:   [4:00] Money doesn’t make us happy, and the extent to which we strive for stuff is a manifestation of how unhappy we actually are inside   [8:00] How we feel about ourselves impacts how we show up in the world. How we treat others! Whether we regard other beings with love and respect!   [16:00] Exactly why healing our world (and ourselves!) may indeed start by getting out of our heads   [32:00] Debunking heady intellectual conversations about the importance of the economy, plus: a laundry list of the ways we use stuff as stand-ins for well-being   [38:00] Tangible ways to "drop into yourself" (because you and others deserve it!)     Resources mentioned: Episode #478: Charting A Rich Life Reclaiming the Sacred: Healing Our Relationships with Ourselves and the World Thank you to Wild for sponsoring this week's episode! Well, hello there, my friends, and welcome back. My name is Stephanie Safarian, and you're listening

0:05.1

to Episode 507 of Sustainable Minimalists. This is a listener-supported show about intentional

0:11.8

and eco-friendly minimalist living. On today's show, we are taking the first step towards

0:18.1

reclaiming our humanity. Oh, my goodness. Yes, more specifically, we are seeking

0:24.1

to get more in touch with our emotional selves so that we can cultivate compassion for the planet,

0:31.6

yes, but also for fellow human beings. And we're going to do all of that in 45-ish minutes. Now let me back up

0:40.0

and let me say that this conversation today was recorded prior to last week's presidential

0:46.6

election here in the United States. And holy moly, listening back to this conversation

0:51.8

after the election was a powerful experience for me.

If the world is not looking the way you want it to at this moment in time, whether it be

1:04.0

due to the climate crisis or with regard to the potential mass deportation of millions of

1:09.3

people or with regard to the stripping away of

1:12.1

women's rights, LGBTQ plus rights, my guest argues today that solving the problem, whatever the

1:20.4

problem is, starts by going inward, by cultivating your own emotional health. Because when we're healthy on the inside, when we've

1:31.0

healed our wounds on the inside, our external reality begins to reflect that. I do hope that, again,

1:39.5

if you're feeling uncertain about the way the world is going, and perhaps you don't, if you don't, I'll be honest, this conversation might not be for you. But if you're feeling uncertain about the way the world is going, and perhaps you don't. If you don't,

1:45.4

I'll be honest, this conversation might not be for you. But if you are feeling like I am

1:50.6

uncertain about the way the world is going, I hope you will receive some comfort from today's

1:55.7

conversation. Or as my guest likes to say, I hope you will receive some guide posts to help you along your

2:03.2

journey navigating big feelings and uncertain times. My guest today is Jeff Golden. He is the

2:10.3

author of reclaiming the sacred, healing our relationships with ourselves and the world. Jeff has been

2:16.5

on the show before. His first
