CreativeLive student and filmmaker, Alec Cutter first came on my radar in 2016 during a live panel event in Seattle. After playing division one soccer at Gonzaga University, he moved to NYC with a dream to become a filmmaker, where he faced the classic chicken and egg dilemma. He needed a portfolio to get hired, but felt like getting hired was necessary to create a portfolio. Living on a friends couch, working multiple jobs, Alec used his spare time and income to create videos for cafes around Brooklyn. We get into the specifics around how those videos led to his full-time job in the industry and the path to his most recent project Nando, which was accepted into the Tribeca Film Festival.
It isn't often that we host a CreativeLive student on the podcast, but Alec's willingness to take risks, put in the work and pursue stories and areas he's passionate about exemplifies the power of many philosophies and strategies we talk about here on the show. If you've ever doubted whether it's possible to succeed in going after your dreams, this episode is for you.
If you're interested in watching Nando be sure to follow Alec on Instagram, @aleccutter.
Enjoy!

0:50.0 | They, this is, there is a pattern here to listening to following, paying attention to the people who are incredibly high performers. |
1:02.7 | But that these things are available to everyone, the skills of, of personal risk, of awareness, of fulfillment, the pursuit of your passion, |
1:17.7 | that these things can come to life by simply doing the things that we see around us in our |
1:24.8 | community. |
1:25.5 | And that makes me want to introduce this, this, this micro show is about someone in this |
1:31.1 | community named Alec Cutter. |
1:33.4 | Now, we've been hearing for a long time that you wanted to hear some of these stories |
1:36.9 | of people in the community. |
1:38.3 | And we've shared stories before, Babin, Paul Ninson, a few folks who basically started listening to the show and or |
1:47.2 | creative live and have transformed their lives and the art that they are putting out in the |
1:53.5 | world and to create real impact, meaningful change for themselves and others. |
2:00.6 | So today's story, I sit down with Alec |
2:04.6 | Cutter, as I mentioned, and Alec was, he came to Photo Week, which is a physical event |
2:09.4 | that Creative Live has hosted, gosh, I think for eight or 10 years running. Of course, |
2:16.3 | took a break for the pandemic. |
2:27.3 | And he physically attended and was on a panel where we were asking, you know, people to share their dreams. And, you know, we made a plan sort of in real time and how to do that. |
2:31.1 | And I was struck by Alex Story. And in short, he's from a, I don't know, |
