He joined the Army straight out of school and briefly attended the College of DuPage in 1974 before moving to Falls Church, Virginia, to train as a military police officer, and later begin what would be a 30-year career in Bowling Brook, Illinois, where, in 1979, he would receive the Police Officer of the Year
