Summary

Philosopher Dr. Aaron Simmons & ethicist Dr. Kevin Carnahan join me for a powerful and enlightening conversation. These two friends and scholars attempt to process the recent election results through the lens of philosophy, theology, and ethics. Addressing complex societal anxieties, they helped me delve into themes of burnout, cross-tribal dialogue, the reality of human suffering, and the necessity of compassion. Despite the challenging topics, the conversation maintains a hopeful tone, encouraging listeners to lead with empathy and resilience during turbulent times. You can WATCH this conversation on YouTube here. Dr. Simmons is an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Furman University. You can follow his Substack 'Philosophy in the Wild.' Dr. Carnahan is Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Central Methodist University, former editor of the Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics, and president of The Niebuhr Society. You can follow him on Tic-Tok. Hello everyone. This is Tripp. And, you know, we're going to process this election. And I thought the first time talking about it, it would be good to have a philosopher and an ethicist, and not just any of them,

0:22.7

ones I'm friends with, so that the processing of this experience that took place in text messages

0:30.6

and such can be had. And doing it the first time we were even talking about this before,

0:36.6

given just how much our constituency is unresponsive to all sorts of things, I thought it would be a form of pedagogy for three straight white guys to process it.

0:48.5

And then Monday, by the way, Diana, Beller Bass and I will do it, which if you are a homebrew member and join the

0:56.1

ruining dinner stuff regularly is fun because I basically am playing shotgun to a historian

1:03.8

and scholar of American religion who's much more informed and aware of what's going on.

1:09.5

So that happened then and there's going to be other opportunities for this.

1:14.4

And it's a philosophical theologian with a philosopher, friend, and a good old Niberian ethicist right here.

1:21.5

I thought we would attempt at the beginning processing what's going on of letting each of them kind of frame it from their

1:30.3

disciplines. Because the temptation, I think, is all of the energy and emotion and stuff flying out of you.

1:38.3

And one of the things theoretically, I hope, we've learned in the academy, It's not just that we've managed to create a

1:45.8

culture of self-righteousness and alienate large portions of the working class, despite having

1:50.1

deep commitments to their well-being, is the ability to provide framing reflections with the

1:58.3

wisdom that we study and inherit it.

2:01.1

And it's our task to figure out how to hand it on.

2:03.6

And obviously, that's something I think it's very clear.

2:07.6

We're doing worse and worse on a regular basis.

2:10.6

And being friends with Aaron and Kevin and knowing both of them kind of share this desire

2:16.6

in the way we see our work within the academy

2:19.4

is also part of a vocation as Christians and as citizens.

2:24.3

Anyway, that's what we're hoping to do.
