with some sad news that broke overnight. Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas

has died after a battle with cancer.

She was 74 years old. Back in June, she announced that she had been diagnosed with pancreatic

cancer and was undergoing treatment. Jackson Lee, who was born in New York City, served the people

of Texas for more than 30 years, beginning her political career on Houston City Council,

and then serving in the House of Representatives since 1995.

Throughout her tenure, she served on several important committees, including the judiciary,

Homeland Security, and Budget.

She was also a fierce and outspoken advocate for the interests of Black Americans.
