0:29.2	Whether it's droughts, wildfires, or floods,
0:31.5	climate change has put lives and livelihoods in peril.
0:35.2	But the UN Deputy Secretary General, Am J. Mohamed hasn't lost hope for
0:40.4	turning things around. In her talk at the Countdown Summit in 2021, she calls on us to reinvest in
0:46.5	human potential with an idea called the Great Green Wall. As a girl, I walked along the shores of Lake Chad, one of the largest lakes in Africa.
0:59.8	It went on forever, touching four countries, Chad, Niger, Cameroon, and my own country, Nigeria.
1:07.7	It seemed like an ocean to me at the time, with 30 million people relying on its bounty.
1:13.7	Sadly, today, as you fly over Lake Chad,
1:16.1	you won't see much.
1:17.8	It's a fraction of its original size.
1:20.9	90% of this freshwater basin has dried up,
1:25.0	and with it, millions and millions of livelihoods,
1:28.4	farmers, fisherfolk, and our market women.
1:32.2	Climate change takes yet another victim.
1:35.3	Now at another extreme weather event, the hamutan.
1:39.3	What was once a short three-month season of dust and wind,
1:42.8	one farmer told me the dust storms are coming earlier and bigger every year.
