Summary

The greatest and most revered of Israel's kings was David. It is from the family of David that the Messiah would come into the world and to the surprise of Israel and of the world, the Messiah who is born from the House of David, is the God of Israel himself! Mary, the Mother of God, is therefore to be likened to a new Ark of the Covenant, for in her womb, the God of Israel dwells and makes himself not only Israel's Messiah, but in wonder of the Incarnation, he becomes for us a new and everlasting covenant.

readings for today, this fourth Sunday of Advent, we have to move into a Davidic space.

0:56.5

I mean, a space that's characterized conditioned by King David. Along with Moses and Abraham, David

was the most important figure in the Old Testament. His kingship represented the fulfillment of

1:11.2

so many of the expectations of Israel, and his reign became synonymous with imperial power

1:18.1

and with peace. It was the high point of Israelite life. Moreover, David received an extraordinary

1:28.7

promise, unlike a promise given to any other figure in the Old Testament. You'll find it recorded

1:34.5

in the second book of Samuel. Through the prophet Nathan, God informed David that David's

1:43.9

line would last forever and that a son of his body would rule over Israel forever. Now, it's

1:54.8

interesting, isn't it? Because you say, okay, a line that lasts forever, I kind of get that,

1:58.4

that your line will just go on and on endlessly. But then the second part of the promise, that

2:03.0

somehow the fruit of your body, a descendant of yours, would rule over Israel forever. Something

2:12.0

very mystical, very strange about that prediction. Now, during the long years that followed the time

2:19.5

of David, it's fair to say that Israel remained haunted by the memory of this great King and haunted

2:27.9

even more by this promise. Now, soon after David's reign, his United Empire fell apart. It split
