Summary

The skis, ski boots, and bindings made for human-powered ski-touring are very different from the ones built for the resort. But what about the clothes? Raide has been rethinking what apparel for the skintrack vs. the resort should look like, and their new collection is quite the ambitious debut. Luke Koppa discusses it all with Raide founder, Kyle Siegel.

Howdy, everybody? Welcome back to another episode of Year 30 on the Blister Podcast Network. My name is Luke Kappa. I am the managing editor at Blister, and I'm coming to you from our home base, an elevation hotel in Crested Butte, Colorado. As always, you can check out everything we are doing and reviewing over at blister

review.com. Now, today we are diving deep into ski touring apparel, and why hitting the

0:29.4

skin track on your touring setup or splitboard demands very different things from your clothing

0:34.1

versus riding lifts at the resort. Then we go into the specifics of how and why one company has gone about creating their

0:42.1

first ever collection of apparel and designed it specifically for human-powered skiing

0:47.3

and snowboarding.

My guest today is Kyle Siegel, the founder of Rade, who we last talked to a couple years ago

when Raid was launching their first ever product.

Since then, we've been seeing Raid packs and running belts pop up everywhere from the summit

of Everest to a whole bunch of trail running race podiums.

However, up until a few weeks ago, they'd only made

1:12.4

one piece of winter clothing. Now they've launched their four-piece tour tech kit, and I was

1:18.3

extremely intrigued, and honestly, a bit skeptical, as soon as I put eyes on the specs and the things

1:24.4

they were claiming about it. So while we will be doing our own testing of

1:28.9

these pieces in the very near future, I was super excited to get the full story behind them. Now,

1:34.9

Kyle is someone who's very focused on the details of all the gear we use in the mountains,

1:40.5

and he's someone who's happy to discuss those details in depth, so he is a great fit for

1:46.8

Gear 30.

1:47.9

Together we go over how and why touring apparel needs to do different things than what

1:52.9

you'd wear at the resort, why so many touring pieces still end up being very similar to

1:58.3

the resort ones, the holes in the market that Kyle was aiming to
